The latest report from US market researchers IC Insights is showing the impact of the cyclical downturn in the semiconductor industry on the top 20 suppliers. Of these top 20 companies, it is mergers that are providing the growth in the first quarter, such as Intel's acquisition of Altera, although both the Broadcom/Avago combination and NXP/Freescale saw declines.
All three main foundries -TSMC, UMC and Global Foundries, saw a year on year decline, highlighting the general challenge of the market, along with the drop in memory prices hitting companies such as Samsung. Intel, NVIDIA, Infineon and Mediatek were the only companies to see growth.
