IoT dominates the top stories in August

By Nick Flaherty www.flaherty.co.uk

The Internet of Things has dominated the top stories on the Embedded Blog during August. While some of the data is conflicting, from 2.5bn wireless sensors by 2021 (2.5bn wireless IoT sensors to ship by 2021),  the main interest was in the higher figures for 27bn just a few years later. This will generate 2Zbytes of data a year, which will put a tremendous strain on data centre infrastructure. Hence the situation that a lot of that data is going to waste and new ways to use that data automatically (such as AI - Startup aims to bring artificial intelligence to IoT nodes...) are increasingly important.

The ways of providing and protecting that data, from new LTE-M and LTE-NB cellular modules and ways to encrypt the data are also proving essential reading. The encryption side is booming with new co-processors emerging from a number of providers as well as new ways to provide two factor authentication.

The top five stories in August were:
  1. IoT to hit 27bn devices by 2025 producing 2 Zb of data ... 5 Aug 2016
  2. A lot of IoT data is going to waste, says survey 4 Aug 2016
  3. Vital end-to-end encryption for embedded IoT applications...11 Aug 2016
  4. Telit speeds up LTE for IoT with new series of single mode modules... 24 Aug 2016
  5. ZTE makes move to dominate IoT and 5G 16 Aug 2016
