Module adds WiFi and Bluetooth to existing development kits

By Nick Flaherty www.flaherty.co.uk

Distributor Avnet has teamed up with Murata on a new interface module that lets designers of wireless, embedded and Internet of Things (IoT) systems add wireless capabilities to its existing development kits.

Based on the Murata Type 1DX module, the $59 AES-PMOD-MUR-1DX-G Pmod includes example guidelines for Avnet’s ZedBoard and UltraZed-EG Development Kits to demonstrate how to enable and use the wireless functions from PetaLinux. For easier Wi-Fi certification, the Type 1DX module complies with IEEE 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth Version 4.1 plus EDR, Power Class 1 (10dBm max) + BLE.

“These days, bringing an electronic device to market without wireless connectivity is like selling a car without a gas pedal,” said Bryan Fletcher, technical marketing director for Avnet. “Modules like the Murata 1DX Wi-Fi Bluetooth Pmod offer designers the quickest and most cost-effective means to add wireless functionality to their designs.”

“At Murata, we continually leverage both our experience and market insight and that of our partners, like Avnet, to deliver solutions that help make IoT a reality,” said Ghouse Mohiuddin, business development manager, Murata. “The IDX Wi-Fi Bluetooth Pmod is a prime example of the innovation that sets us apart. Smaller than a dime, this certified module is designed to fit into small spaces and uses minimal external circuitry to overcome design challenges.”

Avnet currently offers Murata 1DX Wi-Fi Bluetooth Pmod reference designs for the Avnet ZedBoard and Avnet UltraZed-EG development kits. In addition, the new interface module is compatible with any development board that has access to a dual 2x6 Pmod connection, such as the PicoZed SOM + Carrier, MicroZed SOM + Carrier and Arty Artix-7 low-cost FPGA development board.
